The Salvation Army Mission
ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY IN CHARLOTTE AND DESOTO COUNTIES.
In September, 1986 The Salvation Army opened Port Charlotte Service Unit, which became Port Charlotte Corps a year later. For almost 40 years, thousands of families and individuals in the entire County have been beneficiaries of our services. Officers, Soldiers, Advisory Board members, and Volunteers have fought tirelessly against hunger and hopelessness in an effort to keep the national standards in efficiency and prestige characteristic of The Salvation Army at national level. Before 2010, Arcadia Service Unit was managed by Florida Divisional Headquarters, but that year it was transferred to Port Charlotte Corps. In few years, it has been visible the improvements not only in presence but also in services. 2004’s Charlie Hurricane proved the maturity of The Salvation Army when it was forced to face a high magnitude emergency situation. This challenge did not only change our communities but also gave us the confidence about the capabilities of our movement.

Her family had always been “just okay” living paycheck to paycheck, but after Mejean quit her job to become a full-time student, things became harder for her family. Her husband, Ray, became the sole breadwinner.
Then tragedy struck.
Mejean was hit by a car. Ray quit his job immediately to take care of his wife and tend to her every need. At the time, Mejean was a University of Houston student pursuing a computer engineering degree. The bills began to pile up, and their finances spiraled out of control. They lost ..
