Miami, FL (January 13, 2023) – Miami, FL (January 13, 2023) – The Salvation Army of Miami is one of the available shelters that provides a cold weather room during the low temperature days in Miami. We are proud to be an emergency partner with The Homeless Trust.

The Cold Weather Room at our Center of Hope shelter located at 1907 NW 38th Street, Miami, Fl can host 20 men in need of a warm place to stay. While staying at our Center of Hope, we provide them free breakfast, lunch, dinner and a place to sleep.

July 20, 2022 – The Salvation Army Miami Area Command has recently partnered up with the Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation of Coral Gables to provide increased healthcare to clients within the community. Their recent donation has assisted in helping us provide care for those served at the Health Resource Center.

Three out of four of the uninsured population are in poverty. The lack of insurance and deprivation results in individuals foregoing preventative care. Those in need are more likely to wait until their health conditions are severe before taking action and pursuing medical attention.

In 2019, the Salvation Army announced the grand opening of the Health Resource Center. With the assistance of community partners including the Health Foundation of South Florida and Camillus Health Concern, the Health Resource Center was made possible and continues to be a vital medical access point for the residents within the shelter. Residents and clients are able to receive more healthcare assistance without the hassle of transportation and delayed 911 dispatch.

The Salvation Army of Miami Receives Grant from the Suncoast Credit Union

(Miami, FL) (May 3, 2022) – The Salvation Army of Miami is proud to announce the receipt of a Suncoast Credit Union Foundation grant for $10,000 to help serve families in the Pathway of Hope program.

 On the surface, The Salvation Army and Suncoast Credit Union may not seem like they have a lot in common, but in reality, they both have a commitment to improving the lives of children and families in Florida. This grant will help provide extended practical support for families with children at the Miami Area Command’s emergency shelter and in the community to break the cycle of poverty.

The Pathway of Hope program was established by The Salvation Army in 2015 and was launched at the Miami Area Command in 2019. The program goal is to meet the immediate needs of families and help them identify long-term, sustainable and holistic solutions to increase stability. Case managers meet with clients biweekly over two years to overcome challenges like unemployment, unstable housing, and lack of education and work towards increased self-sufficiency and identified goals. Suncoast partners with Salvation Army Miami to support families at a critical time with a housing affordability crisis declared April 8 by Miami-Dade County. Suncoast serves 40 counties across the state and is Florida’s largest credit union.

The grant will be used to help provide financial support to families to rebuild their lives and build a solid base as they find housing and work through the program. Families will see their income increase and work to rise out of poverty, which will benefit children who when in poverty for over half their childhood are 32 times more likely to be in poverty as an adult.

Poverty in the United States is an epidemic that includes one in five children. Together, Suncoast Credit Union and The Salvation Army will be able to fund more stories of hope and address the challenges of poverty one family at a time.

Teaming Up With Toyota!

Miami, FL. – (March 2022)

For a third year, the Toyota Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association (TLMODA) renewed its national partnership with The Salvation Army to address the increasing food insecurity challenges families face across the country during spring break. The Salvation Army of Miami is proud to be involved with two of the twenty-six dealerships across the nation that are taking part in the movement!

“Many families depend on school lunches to help feed their children on a daily basis, so when schools close, food insecurity can be a grueling reality. Through our partnership with TLMODA, those essential needs are met for thousands of families in our communities,” said The Salvation Army National Commander, Commissioner Kenneth Hodder.

By working with local Toyota dealerships in West Kendall and Homestead, food boxes were distributed to more communities in need. Over the course of two days, the distributions taking place at the West Kendall Toyota and South Dade Toyota dealerships handed out 400 boxes of food.

We are thankful to our partners at Toyota for their commitment to this day of service and for helping us tackle food insecurity across Miami-Dade County.

A Miami Heat Filled Holiday

Miami, FL. – (December 24, 2021)

On Christmas Eve, a special guest visited The Salvation Army of Miami’s Center of Hope. Tyler Herro, from the Miami Heat came to spread the holiday cheer, serve meals, and deliver presents to our families who are currently calling the Center of Hope home.

Herro took the time to visit with all our families and even the staff who keep the shelter running.

Pictures don’t fully capture how much this visit meant to the families and staff this Christmas season! The impact of this visit will be felt not only during the holiday season but year-round.

Tyler and his team are truly out doing the most good and we at The Salvation Army are so thankful!

A Home for the Holidays

Miami, FL. – (December 8, 2021)

In May of 2021, a man named Mr. V came to the Salvation Army looking for help. Not only was he dealing with homelessness, but he was also blind. Enter the case management team at The Salvation Army. Over the next six months, his team helped him navigate the system to find sustainable and holistic solutions to find housing, benefits, and independent life.

The Salvation Army was able to provide a temporary home for Mr. V., but even more importantly, by being at The Center of Hope he was able to work daily with his case managers to achieve his goals. Together, they were able to get his social security straightened out to receive payments, which in turn provided a stable footing to live independently.

Securing benefits was only part of what was needed to bring Mr. V out of his literal dark place, regaining his vision would be next. Working with his case management team, they were able to secure a free trial eye surgery to help Mr. V regain some of his vision and provide him with more independence.

For Pamela, one of his case managers, benefits and vision restoration wasn’t enough. “I realized, that since Mr. V had an income and he could see, we should try our luck at housing,” Pamela said. In August of 2021, she began the process of finding a place for Mr. V to live independently.

By October 2021, Mr. V had keys to his new apartment. He went from not being able to see to write his own name on his paperwork, to looking at the face of his case management team with happy tears in his eyes when he found out he would have a home for the holidays.

Situations like the one Mr. V was in do not get solved overnight and are unfortunately all too common in Miami-Dade County. By supporting The Salvation Army we will be able to continue helping individuals and families find their way out of their darkest moments towards one of hope and light!

The Salvation Army of Miami Responds in New Orleans

New Orleans, LA. – (Sept. 24, 2021)

When Hurricane Ida hit Louisiana at the end of August, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) mustered teams from Florida, Texas, and the Alabama Louisana Mississippi (ALM) region to respond across the state. Two staff members from The Salvation Army of Miami were called to respond in Lousiana during the first two-week deployment. Captain Alvaro Chils from The Salvation Army, Sunset Corps, and Kristen Reeves, the public relations manager for Miami Area Command, were part of a group that was first on the ground to lend assistance to those in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes.

Captain Chils provided emotional and spiritual care to those impacted by the hurricane and could be found walking from home to home to provide prayer, food, and water to those who couldn’t leave their homes. Kristen was involved with coordinating and planning where canteen feeding teams would set up to provide food, water, and other resources to different pockets of the community stranded without power. Both were part of an initial effort that provided over 120,000 meals in two weeks to those impacted by Hurricane Ida in the New Orleans area.
