Corps Officers
Captains Jeff and Sheena Marquis.
Captain Jeff Marquis was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Salvation Army officers. His parents eventually settled in the suburbs of Chicago, where Jeff spent his adolescent years growing in his gift and love for music and the arts. He attended Asbury College, now Asbury University, in Wilmore, KY, where he studied and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Still involved with The Salvation Army church, Jeff began teaching music with the Army in both Texas and Florida. While in Texas, Jeff met his now wife and partner in ministry, Sheena.
Captain Sheena Marquis, born and raised in Dallas, TX, also grew up in the ministry of The Salvation Army. As a young girl, she and her family were assisted by The Salvation Army’s transitional housing center in Arlington, TX. Upon graduating from high school, Sheena served on a summer missions team to Kenya with The Salvation Army that nurtured her love for service. She received her Bachelor’s of Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington, and later a Master of Social Work from the University of South Florida in Tampa.
In 2013, Jeff and Sheena accepted God’s call to deeper service as officers in The Salvation Army. Prior to coming to Stuart, they served as Corps Officers for three years in Clay County near Jacksonville. They have a young son, Caedmon.
The Salvation Army Responses to Coronavirus COVID-19
As the coronavirus COVID-19 has evolved into a pandemic, we are monitoring the situation daily. Safety is of utmost priority, so we have ramped up efforts to slow the spread of this virus among our employees, volunteers, and the homeless and other vulnerable people we serve.
In the United States, one in six people live in poverty, and more than 550,000 are counted as homeless. These populations severely lack access to proper care, hygiene, updated information, and medical resources, which makes them more susceptible to the virus. This is where we come in. This is who we serve.
We are developing new hygiene and cleaning protocols to help keep safe our residents and others who depend on The Salvation Army’s programs and services to survive. In addition, all staff, volunteers, and program participants have been sent hygiene and prevention information as recommended by the CDC.
We also anticipate a significant increase in need of emergency assistance for low-wage earners facing layoffs due to COVID-19. The support we provide – rent/mortgage, utility, and food assistance, among others – will become more urgent as the situation evolves.
Meanwhile, we will continue to work in close partnership with area government and health experts to prepare and respond to meet specific community needs. We will continue to update this page as developments warrant.
We need support from our communities to continue to meet the daily needs of these vulnerable populations. Your donations will continue to help us respond to the situation.

You’re making a difference
Each of our clients has a unique and inspirational story and we're thrilled to share them. Today we are going to share the story of Tiffany.
Tiffany is a hard-working, independent mother who has been providing for herself and her family since her ex-husband left her when she was 4 months pregnant with 2 kids.
“I found myself alone with no friends and family to help. I was behind on my rent and facing food insecurity.” That's when she found The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army helped Tiffany with financial support in order to keep a roof over her family's heads, utility support, food from our pantry, and other wrap-around services.
“As a single mother my biggest concern was providing stability for my family and the Salvation Army is the biggest part of my support system, hands down.”
Nowadays the Salvation Army is working with Tiffany's family through its Pathway of Hope program, which provides individualized services to families with children who desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis.
“I get really emotional when I think about it because the Salvation Army has helped me so much.” So if you are reading this I want to thank you. Because of your donation I was able to keep a roof over my family's head and food in our house.”
At the end of the day, it’s not about how great our own works might be. It’s about the difference we were able to make for everyone we meet, with every opportunity we are given and with every gift you entrust us with.
The Salvation Army’s Compassion House program in Martin County goes above and beyond to help local families in need.
Durnie, a single mom, was homeless and desperate when she contacted the Compassion House for help. "I did not have any support before coming to the Salvation Army," she says. She is now living in the shelter with her son and daughter, working two jobs and saving her money to move into a stable home of their own.
Durnie is receiving one-on-one guidance and support from the Compassion House staff and is optimistic about her family's future."I am extremely grateful for all the services they are providing to me and my kids during our time here.”
Every family has unique needs. And in each of those families, The Salvation Army strives to create and implement solutions tailored to those specific needs. That dollar that you gave yesterday helps us today to be able to take care of Durnie's family and many others. Thank you for making a difference in countless lives in our community.
