William and Catherine Booth build a movement by preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the destitute in London’s East End.

William Booth embarked upon his ministerial career in 1852, desiring to win the lost multitudes of England to Christ. He walked the streets of London to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute.

Booth abandoned the conventional concept of a church and a pulpit, instead taking his message to the people. His fervor led to disagreement with church leaders in London, who preferred traditional methods. As a result, he withdrew from the church and traveled throughout England, conducting evangelistic meetings.

In 1865, William Booth was invited to hold a series of evangelistic meetings in the East End of London. He set up a tent in a Quaker graveyard, and his services became an instant success. His renown as a religious leader spread throughout London, and he attracted followers who were dedicated to fight for the souls..

2020 Giving Challenge

The 2020 Giving Challenge has come to an end!

Our thanks to the 266 donors who combined to raise, including the match, $47,860 for us.  These funds will be so helpful as we begin moving from the COVID-19 crisis phase into a recovery phase.  Just because the Giving Challenge is over doesn't mean it is too late to make a donation.  You can always donate to The Salvation Amy by clicking here, but funds will not be matched by the Patterson Foundation.

The 2020 Giving Challenge will be from noon to noon April 28-29

By supporting The Salvation Army during the 2020 Giving Challenge, presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, you are helping us help others in need.  Some may have experienced a crisis during COVID-19 and need our help as they recovery financially from this pandemic.  Others may have had previous challenges and be enrolled into one of our case managed shelter programs.

How does it work and why shouldn't I give directly to The Salvation Army?

  • Visit the Giving Challenge website between the hours of noon and noon on April 28-29.
  • Make your donation online, using your credit card.
  • You will receive a receipt from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
  • At the end of the Challenge, all donations will be tallied and The Patterson Foundation will match donations up to $100 (some restrictions apply, see below).
  • The Community Foundation of Sarasota County will send a payment for all donations and matches to the participating nonprofits.

The Match - How it works and restrictions

  • If you donate $25 to The Salvation Army on the Giving Challenge website, The Patterson Foundation will match your $25 donation.
  • If you donate $100 to The Salvation Army on the Giving Challenge website, The Patterson Foundation will match your $100 donation.
  • If you donate $101 or more to The Salvation Army on the Giving Challenge website, The Patterson Foundation will match $100 of your donation.
  • Only one donation per person to an organization will be matched.

Thank you for your support!
