From Chaos to Calm

Kathleen’s journey to stability

After years of bouncing from house to house – often staying with relatives and friends – and even living in her car behind a local church, Kathleen hit bottom. She and her two young daughters were now staying in a shelter, she was without a job, recently injured in a serious car accident and fighting to keep her family afloat.

She never stopped wanting a better life for her girls; even a fraction of the childhood she experienced. Recognizing that they were forced to grow up too fast and were paying the consequences of their chaotic lifestyle and her struggle with addiction to prescription narcotics following brain surgery, Kathleen was determined to do better: to take better care of herself and to give her family the stability they needed.

Kathleen found The Salvation Army’s Rapid Rehousing program and it was just the break she needed. “This is the hurdle we could never climb over and kept us stuck for so long,” she said. The Rapid Rehousing staff worked with Kathleen to help her get into housing and will walk alongside her for the next year with more case management support to help break the cycle of chronic homelessness for Kathleen and the likelihood that her girls would end up homeless as adults as well.

Kathleen has been clean for one year and three months. She and her daughters have only been in their apartment for six weeks but it already has the warmth of a home. Kathleen worked hard, despite her injury and circumstance, to make sure that her daughters had a safe place to live, filled with love. “The relief of finally having our own home is beyond words,” she remarked.

With the comfort of knowing her family has a stable home for the next year, and a lease in her name, Kathleen has been able to focus on getting her daughters the support they need, getting them in school and actively looking to get back into the workforce. Kathleen says she’s doing things differently now, to achieve different, better results.

Rapid Rehousing is a homelessness prevention program that aims to do just that: quickly reconnect families experiencing homelessness with permanent housing options through assistance with financial resources and targeted supportive services. This HUD-funded program, administered by The Salvation Army through the local COC, aims to reduce the amount of time families are homeless and remove the barriers to long-term sustainable housing.
