The Salvation Army has been active in Broward County since 1926, working to fulfill our mission of “meeting human needs in His name without discrimination”. Lauderdale pioneer Ivy Stranahan was active in the formation of The Salvation Army in Broward County and was one of the original board members. Over the past 94 years, our work has had many expressions in the community, always aimed at helping the poorest and those most in need. As society’s need change, The Salvation Army has the ability to respond locally to shape and modify our services to meet the needs of the local community.
Our organization provides housing to 44 families with children and 125 single men and women experiencing homelessness at any given time. Besides housing and meals, the program provides supportive services including case management, life skills classes, and employability skills training.
In addition to working with people experiencing homelessness, The Salvation Army provides enriching educational programs to children and teens, recreation and education programs to seniors and emergency rent, utilities, and food assistance to needy people in our community. Those experiencing generational poverty partake in an 18 week Getting Ahead group aimed at helping participants identify, build, and leverage resources to build economic stability. Special holiday activities and emergency disaster services round out the agency’s programs.

Soon after beginning his ministerial career in England in 1852, William Booth abandoned the concept of the traditional church pulpit in favor of taking the gospel of Jesus Christ directly to the people. Walking the streets of London, he preached to the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute.
When fellow clergymen disagreed with Booth’s unconventional approach, he and his wife Catherine withdrew from the church to train evangelists throughout England. The couple returned to the East End of London in 1865, where many followers joined their fight for the souls of lost men and women. Within 10 years, their organization, operating under the name “The Christian Mission," had over 1,000 volunteers and evangelists.
Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among their first converts to Christianity. And soon, those converts were also preaching and singing in the streets as living testimonies to the power of God.
When Booth read a printer's proof of the 1878 “Christian Mission” annual report, he noticed the statement "The Christian Mission is a volunteer army." Crossing out the words "volunteer army," he penned in "Salvation Army." From those words came the basis of the foundation deed of The Salvation Army.
From that point onward, converts became soldiers of Christ and were known then, as now, as Salvationists. They launched an offensive throughout the British Isles that, in spite of violence and persecution, converted 250,000 Christians between 1881 and 1885. Their message spread rapidly, gaining a foothold in America and soon after Canada, Australia, France, Switzerland, India, South Africa, Iceland, and Germany.
Today, The Salvation Army is active in virtually every corner of the world and serves in over 100 countries, offering the message of God’s healing and hope to all those in need.

The Salvation Army Ambassadors group, founded by Virginia (Ginny) Miller, was brought together with a primary mission to inform the community of The Salvation Army’s importance and relevance. Ambassadors are advocates of The Army. Ambassadors meet once or twice a year for networking and an informative presentation regarding current and future endeavors of The Army. They are educated as to the way The Army works, how it is funded and operates. Ambassadors will be “the first to know” when we are heading off to assist in some disaster recovery out of the area – and of course, in our backyard as well. The expertise and talents of members of the Ambassadors are utilized to further the mission of The Salvation Army.

The Center for Worship and Service in Fort Lauderdale offers the opportunity for people of all ages to participate in worship, service, youth programs and other community activities each week.

Community Feeding – The Salvation Army opens its doors for dinner 6 days a week to anyone who is in need. Dinner is served at 4:15pm Friday through Wednesday.
Food Pantry – This program provides non-perishable grocery items and fresh produce to residents in need in Broward County. The pantry is open every Thursday from 9:00am-12:00pm.
Rent & Mortgage Assistance – Provides assistance with one-month payment of rent or mortgage to prevent households from becoming homeless. For more information and to apply for the program please call 954-524-6991.
Disaster Services – The Salvation Army assists the community during times of disaster, both man-made and natural. The Army assists both regionally and locally.
Emergency and Transitional Housing for Individuals and Families
Emergency and Transitional Housing for Individuals and Families – Provides emergency and transitional housing services to households experiencing homelessness. Clients are assisted with case management, childcare, life skills, food, and other supportive services.
- Plymouth Colony located in Hollywood, is home to 33 families, which includes approximately 90 children. The facility allows the families to stay up to 2 years with the opportunity and resources to work towards transitioning to stable, independent, and permanent housing. Residents are helped to identify the underlying issues that brought them into their current situations and to develop practical strategies to return to mainstream society. Case management and life skills, including budgeting and parenting classes, are some of the ways we help our clients make permanent, positive changes in their lives.
- New Beginnings The New Beginnings Program was established to offer a safe, stable environment for expectant mothers who are homeless.
The women in the program have become homeless for many reasons, including poverty, unexpected pregnancy complications that cause them to lose employment, and domestic abuse. Each family in the program receives a private room with bath, meals, day care for older children, case management, life skills training, job and medical referrals, as well as educational classes.
The goal of this structured program is to increase the self-worth of each mother and motivate them to work towards independence for themselves and their family.
If you would like to support our mothers-to-be, please consider donating a “Baby Shower Basket.” Suggested items include diapers, wipes, lotions, clothes, bottles, etc.

Open Door Project
Open Door Project - The Open Door project provides safe shelter to 45 chronically homeless people each night. For some homeless people, especially those who have been on the street for a length of time, lack of trust in “the system” keeps them from seeking shelter. The only “commitment” at this facility will be a one night stay, which includes breakfast.
Each night, homeless people seek safety and a comfortable bed; they also have the opportunity to engage with our staff and some begin to believe that a different way of life is possible.
- Homelessness is a challenge shared by all members of the community, and The Salvation Army is taking a proactive approach to meeting a critical unmet need through the Open Door low demand shelter.
- The goal of the Open Door project is to build trust with chronically homeless people who then may be more willing to receive services to help them attain permanent housing.
- The Salvation Army collaborates with 211 Broward and other homeless providers in the Broward County Continuum of Care including Broward Partnership for the Homeless and Broward Outreach Centers.
Rapid Rehousing – This program is designed to place households experiencing homelessness in permanent housing. Support services include ongoing case management.
Angel Tree – Provides Christmas gifts for children in need. Children must be between 0 and 10 years old. This program serves approximately 1,500 families each year. Application process starts early Fall. Call for more details.
Thanksgiving Dinner – A Thanksgiving meal is served to nearly 400 individuals each year.
Cold Weather Services – We open our shelter to all those experiencing homelessness when the temperature drops below 45 degrees.
Day Respite – Offers respite from being on the street through a variety of basic needs, life skills classes, and structured activities. The goal is to build trust with those experiencing homelessness with the intent of engaging clients in further services, including stable housing placement.
Career Connections – A career skills training program that provides job search knowledge and motivational skills resulting in career employment, advancement, and permanent economic self-sufficiency.
Senior Program: Home League – Each Thursday, 70 seniors gather for fellowship, educational programs, lunch and volunteer opportunities.
Children’s Programs – Children’s programming includes character building for elementary through high school aged children from low-income neighborhood families and families living in our shelter.

Volunteers help to prepare and serve meals to individuals and families living in our shelter, along with other kitchen tasks. Currently there is a great need volunteers daily with a morning shift at 8:00am – 12:00pm. There are also volunteers needed between 3pm-7pm as each day we have community feeding, which provides meals to anyone in the community beginning at 4PM.
Volunteers stock, sort, bag, and distribute non-perishable and perishable items for county residents in need of assistance. We currently need volunteers to help in the food pantry Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00AM – 12:30PM.

Child Care Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help teach children living in our shelter various activities while their parents are attending life skill classes. Classes are scheduled on weekday evenings in Fort Lauderdale. All childcare volunteers must be 18 or older and successfully pass a background check along with fingerprints.
Life Skills Classes
Volunteers teach life skills to clients in evening classes ranging from computer skills to knitting. This is a great opportunity to use your talents to help others. Creativity is highly encouraged, so if you have an idea for a class, please let us know! With the opening of our apartment facilities at Plymouth Colony, we are especially interested in finding instructors for classes in nutrition and general homemaking skills.
Volunteers assist our maintenance staff in general upkeep of our facilities. Hours are anytime Monday-Friday.
Product Drive Coordinators
Volunteers coordinate various product drives through their school, church, or neighborhood to be donated to our shelter. Examples of drives include food, toiletries, and baby care items. All items collected and donated will go to the thousands of individuals and families we help right here in Broward County.
Red Kettle Volunteer
Volunteer to be a bell ringer at one of our many locations across Broward County. The Kettle season starts early November and runs until Christmas eve each Year. This is a great opportunity for groups and volunteers needing community service hours. For more information email our Volunteer Coordinator and let her know you are interested in being a bellringer. Recruitment is all year long!
Angel Tree Volunteer
Our Angel Tree program exists to provide Christmas gifts to underserved Broward County youth. Each year we provide gifts for over 1,500 families and rely on volunteers to help us serve as many households as possible.
Mall Volunteer: Volunteers are needed to staff our mall Angel Trees. Volunteers aid the public in "adopting" angels and collecting gifts. The gifts collected through our Angel Trees help The Salvation Army distribute over 6,000 gifts to 3,000 underprivileged children throughout Broward County. The Angel Tree program runs late November through mid-December at the following malls: Westfield Broward, Galleria Fort Lauderdale, and Pembroke Lakes.
Toy Shop Volunteer: Volunteers sort and package toys for each child adopted at our Angel Trees and prepare the toys for distribution. This position requires a lot of mobility and some lifting, but in exchange for some sweat, you get to feel like you work at the North Pole!
Distribution Day Volunteer: Volunteers are needed to help distribute gifts to those families in need. Come see the joy on families' faces as they realize they will be able to provide Christmas gifts to their children.
Volunteers work with the Development Director to generate ideas, plan and manage special fundraising events throughout the year. This opportunity requires a strong familiarity with the community and its resources, as well as a continuous time commitment. For many of the residents introduced to our transitional housing and shelter, receiving basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing is a priority concern. Once these initial needs are met, we begin to explore ways in which to further bring hope, confidence, and happiness back in to their lives.
We rely on the generosity of our community members to help brighten up the lives of our residents in a variety of ways. Here are a few examples:
Gift cards for $10 – $25 to Publix, Winn Dixie, WalMart or Target. These are used to reward the “Client of the Month.”
Baby Shower Basket
For expectant mothers, the inevitable life-changing event can be overwhelming. Receiving donated pregnancy and baby items can help alleviate some of the worry. Suggestions include a baby blanket, diapers and wipes, clothing, bottles, etc.
For clients who are moving into an apartment or home, procuring the necessary items can be a daunting task. We forget, most who are homeless have little to no possessions. Receiving a head-start to a stable, independent residence eases the transition from homeless to a home. Suggestions include pots & pans, plates, bowls, & utensils, towels, sheets, etc.
Each night 45 individuals who would otherwise be sleeping on the streets of Ft. Lauderdale come to our Open Door shelter. Zip lock bags containing small toiletry items – soap, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, comb, and snacks (raisins, small cans of juice, granola bars, trail mix) would be a welcomed gift.
Group Adoption and Volunteering
Last year, through Angel Tree, The Salvation Army of Broward County distributed new toys and clothing to nearly 3,000 children! This feat was largely accomplished because of Group Adopters—you decided to make a difference in a child’s life. When the community comes together, big things happen.
WHAT IS ANGEL TREE:
Angel Tree provides Christmas gifts for families in need during the holidays. To participate, children receiving a gift must be living with a family that resides within Broward County, Florida and must be between the ages of birth to 10 years old. Additionally, families must complete the online application found on our website by Sunday, October 23rd.

This year, because of rapidly changing economic conditions, many families in our community are in need, and some more than others. As a result, the Army needs your help. We are looking to partner with you to give children in Broward County a Christmas to remember. There are three ways to get involved:

The Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) is an effective residential work therapy program that offers men addicted to drugs and alcohol the opportunity to recapture their dignity, pride, and families through emotional, physical, and spiritual rehabilitation. Job training gives residents valuable technical skills in a number of vocations and in-house classes provide life skills and the opportunity to earn a GED certificate. Residents have the opportunity to regain sobriety, self respect, and a new start in life.
This rehabilitation program is solely supported by income from the thrift stores and monthly car and boat auctions.

A community fundraising event where participants complete our 5K course to raise money for our programs.
Red Shield Redesign Bash
Redesigners will show off their unique skills and donate a repurposed, reimagined, or redesigned piece for auction. Proceeds from the event and auction support our shelter, feeding, and social services programs.
National Donut Day
The Salvation Army of Broward County, together with Dunkin’, will celebrate National Donut Day on June 3, the sweetest day of the year, by honoring local public servants, first responders and healthcare workers.
The Salvation Army helps put new clothes and toys under the tree for 1 million children across the United States who usually have to go without Christmas gifts. Anonymous donors adopt these little “angels” in an expanding Christmas tradition that makes the season brighter for both the gift giver and receiver.
Stuff the Bus
Did you know that The Salvation Army sees an increase in need every September? That’s partly because family finances are strained every year by the expense of providing backpacks, pens, pencils, notebooks, glue sticks, and other basic back to school items. Parents then have to make unfair choices like paying for school supplies or groceries, the electric bill or car insurance.
