Mary…what a role she has in the Christmas story!
“To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.” Luke 1:27-31 KJV
If she had chosen to stay in her state of fear as the angel spoke to her, it is likely the story would be different.
She was just a girl…but she believed and surrendered her life to God’s will. Through reliance and trust, Jesus came into the world. I imagine she did not know what was in store for Him, but she must have had a sense, every time she held Him, that He was special. Not just special the way many moms’ feel about their own kids, but truly special to the world.
In Francesca Battistelli’s song “You’re Here”, you are placed in Mary’s circumstances as she reflects on Baby Jesus and His profound purpose. The song paints a beautiful image of a mother’s love for her child, while also looking to the future joy Jesus will bring to our world.
“And they (the shepherds) came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:16-19 KJV
As you enjoy the song, take time to reflect on how Jesus coming into your life has changed you.
